Adolescents who consume high amounts of chocolate have reduced body fats levels as opposed to those that abstain from eating them, say researchers in Spain.

The researchers followed 1,458 teenagers from Europe were followed and information about how often they ate chocolate within the previous 24 hours on two non-consecutive days collated. The researchers also measured the BMI (Body Mass Index) of each participant.

The results obtained from showed a strong association between high consumption of chocolate and low body fat levels among teenagers. Researchers are yet to establish why this is so but believe that flavonoids contained in chocolate could be playing a role in maintaining a teenager’s body weight.
