Germany’s playmaker Thomas Muller was left to rue a clear goalscoring opportunity against England on Tuesday night.

In the second half (81'), England’s Raheem Sterling miscontrolled a ball that ended in Garmany’s Kai Havertz's feet who in turn passed to Muller. The veteran footballer shot wide past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, killing any chance of getting back into the game for a Euro 2020 quarterfinal spot on Friday.

Striker Harry Kane doubled England's lead with a stunning header five minutes later and Muller cut a deflated and frustrated figure when he was substituted in stoppage time.

The Bayern Munich veteran took to social media on Wednesday to express the pain he is suffering after missing the golden opportunity at Wembley Stadium.

"There it was, that one moment that you will remember in the end, that brings you sleep at night. For whom you work, train and live as a footballer.

"That moment when you have it in your own hands to bring your team back into a close knockout game and to send an entire football nation into ecstasy. To get this opportunity and then to leave it unused, it really hurts me,” Muller posted on Instagram.

"It hurts for the entire DFB team. My teammates and our coach, who all gave me the confidence to be there right then.

"But above all, it hurts because of all the Germany fans out there who stood by us and supported us during this European Championship despite difficult omens. Thank you for your support."

Muller failed to score in the tournament after being recalled from the international wilderness by coach Joachim Low, managing only one shot on target in four games and missing his only big chance.

Gareth Southgate’s men England will now face Ukraine on Saturday in the quarterfinals at the Stadio Olimpico, Rome.
