Steve McClaren is in line for a return to Derby County as head coach.

Chris Powell had been offered the role of manager after it was confirmed on Saturday that Nigel Pearson had left the club.

But the ex-Charlton and Huddersfield boss wants to stay as No.2 at the iPro Stadium.

Former boss McClaren, who left the club under a cloud to take over at Newcastle at the end of the 2014-15 season, has been asked to return and his position could be confirmed in the next 24 hours.

More talks are planned today but it is hoped all parties can reach an agreement.

McClaren, who also played for the Rams in the mid-80s, spent just under two years in charge at the iPro Stadium before he was sacked.

His dismissal followed months of speculation linking him with the Newcastle job with Derby chiefs seriously unhappy that he refused to play it down.

Derby fell out of the promotion race and it was felt that the situation with the manager was a key factor with the players' performances dropping away after a fine start to the season

Paul Clement was brought in by Derby owner Mel Morris as McClaren's replacement but replaced by Darren Wassall with the club deciding abruptly to terminate his contract.

Morris then turned to Pearson in the summer but after a string of poor results the two men had an explosive row which led to the manager's suspension and, ultimately, to his dismissal.

Powell, Pearson's No.2, was put in caretaker charge and had been offered the manager's job, in a move that appealed to the fans, who are fond of their former left-back.

But the club have now moved to bring back McClaren with an announcement expected ahead of Saturday's Championship clash with their bitter old rivals Leeds.

The former Middlesbrough, England, Twente and Wolfsburg boss has been out of the game since he was sacked by Newcastle in March.

His first season in charge of Derby saw the Rams reach the play-off final but they were heartbroken when Bobby Zamora's late goal earned promotion for QPR.
