Schools counting losses as storm tears roofs

Property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed at two schools in Molo, Nakuru County following heavy rains coupled with strong winds.

On Monday evening, strong winds swept through Turi Ward, blowing off the roofs of Mianzini Primary and its sister school Mianzini Secondary.

Cecilia Njuguna, the deputy headteacher at Mianzini Primary School, said she learnt of the incident from residents at around at around 5pm yesterday.

“Four classes and a staff room have extensively been damaged. In the most affected classrooms, the roof collapsed on the chairs and desks, completely destroying them,” said Njuguna.

Books of unknown value were also destroyed, with only a few being salvaged.

The school's Board of Management chairperson James Maina said they had lost property worth millions of shillings after its administration block and a bookstore had their roofs blown away.

“It is a big loss to the school and learners. Computers and books were destroyed by rain. The administration block and three classes were completely destroyed,” said Wainaina. They are, however, thankful that there were no children in the school.
