Carpenter threatens to bewitch student over debt

NAIROBI: A University of Nairobi student is still reeling from shock after a carpenter recently threatened to bewitch him after he reported him to police for failing to make him a bed even after having paid.

The non-resident student, who had been ‘sleeping on the floor’ in his rented room for lack of a bed, had approached the carpenter to make him one.

“The bed was to cost Sh9,000. I had, however, given him Sh6,000 as down payment to motivate him to work expeditiously” the student says.

After more than two months of checking on the carpenter and being told ‘check next week’, the student got impatient.

Balance

It was after incessant nagging that the carpenter confessed to the student he needed all the money and more time to make the bed.

“He told me to clear the balance so as to finish making the bed once and for all, which I did. Lacking a bed had made me avoid inviting some of my friends over to my room, especially my girlfriend whom avoided she dumped me for living like a bird on a cold floor in an empty room,” narrated the student.

Days lapsed and the student got impatient with the carpenter and reported him to a chief in his neigbourhood. Shockingly, the administrator told him he needed ‘lunch’ to act on the matter, but when he dug into his pocket for Sh50 the chief laughed him off, saying that was not enough for lunch. Dejected, the poor student reported the matter to police, who provided the much needed service.

When the student went to notify the carpenter that he had reported the matter to police and the carpenter was to be arrested any time, he got shock of his life.

The carpenter threatened to bewitch and “spoil” him “for he had no idea the kind of man he was playing with”.

“When he mentioned witchcraft, considering the finality with which he was speaking, I was shocked to death and forgot all about the bed. I had to plead with him to refund the money and cancel the order for the sake of peace love and unity,” said the student.

The carpenter was, however, arrested later that day. But luckily, the student, fearing for his life, pleaded for the carpenter’s freedom, citing that they had an amicable agreement to settle the matter without involving police.
