Ethiopian PM to visit Kenya to discuss security, trade with President Uhuru

Nairobi, Kenya: Security has been enhanced ahead of Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn’s visit to Kenya Wednesday for three days.

President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Mombasa Tuesday evening from Dubai where has been since Friday on private visit and was expected in Nairobi later Wednesday to welcome Desalegn, officials said.

During the visit, the two heads of government will discuss strengthening security cooperation, and deepening commitment to regional and international cooperation.

Officials say terrorism and in particular Al-Shabaab militants will be among the issues of discussion amid concerns the terror group wants to destabilize the region.

Both countries have troops in Somalia under Amisom and fighting the terror group.

The two leaders will also review progress on ongoing LAPSSET projects, discuss energy related projects and agreements and seek stronger cooperation on a range of matters, including border management and reducing human trafficking.

They will also Kenya and Ethiopia are strategic partners and will use the visit to enhance bilateral economic cooperation between both countries, including trade relations. Senior officials from Kenya and Ethiopia have been meeting in Nairobi since last week focusing on the speedy implementation of Special Status Agreement signed by the two governments in November 2012.
