State revokes title deeds of 353,770 acres of land acquired irregularly in Lamu

Lamu, Kenya: Ownership of more than 350,000 acres of irregularly acquired land has been revoked in Lamu County.

Title deeds of land totalling 353,770 acres (143,227 hectares) were cancelled and the land returned to Lamu County for public use, Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi told PSCU last evening.

He said the land comprises 12 parcels whose notice of revocation had expired.

The Lands Cabinet Secretary disclosed that more title deeds to irregularly acquired land will be revoked and returned to the public for “farming and other development”.

 Earlier yesterday, President Uhuru Kenyatta met leaders from Lamu at State House, Mombasa, and advised them use the land for the benefit of their people.

  “You can set aside land for industries, markets and other public amenities that will directly improve the lives of the people,” President Kenyatta said.

 The President, who will issue title deeds to land owners in seven villages in Mkunumbi, also urged citizens to use their pieces of land to improve their welfare. President Kenyatta will start a two-day visit to Lamu County Thursday.
