KILIFI; KENYA: Election of members to the Kilifi North Constituency Development Fund committee failed to take off in some wards following claims that candidates were from elsewhere.
Residents rejected some candidates for the Hospital/Sokoni ward alleging they came from other constituencies. There were protests at Kibaoni Primary School where the election was to take place causing them to be called off until Sunday.
Residents also lamented the short notice given for the polls. Mr Stephen Charo, a resident, said they needed adequate time to scrutinise individuals. “The notice given to us to assemble here and elect our five CDF committee representatives for Hospital/Sokoni ward was very short and for that reason we want the elections postponed,” he said.
Area MP Gideon Mungaro said only residents of Kilifi North could participate in the polls and added he will not interfere with the elections.
“This committee will be mandated to assist the communities to identify development projects and the people should get good leaders,” said Mr Mungaro on Thursday.
The Hospital/Sokoni ward representative to the Kilifi County Assembly Mr Lawrence Kilabo accused some interested persons of bringing voters from other constituencies.
