Nyeri, Kenya: When the Government recovered 2,100 acres of Hombe Forest – near the Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri – which had been encroached by squatters, there was great excitement among Kenyan environmentalists.
That was way back in 2001. The environmentalists enthusiastically planted 2 million tree seedlings on the recovered land to yardstick reforestation efforts. But the joy was short-lived because even before the seedlings could mature, locals had already ventured into the nearby Mount Kenya Forest to fell trees for firewood. That was a cause for alarm especially because a nearby tourist lodge stood to lose many tourists visiting for nature walks.
