Lamu County has formulated a recovery strategy aimed at boosting tourism in the area, which had suffered badly owing to insecurity. Governor Issa Timamy said his government in-conjunction with tourism stakeholders seek to use the island's upcoming festival to attract visitors.
Speaking in Lamu as he announced dates for the the annual Lamu International Cultural Festivals, Timamy said the event, which will be held from November 26 to 29, hopes to attract over 30,000 guests, both local and foreign.
"The county intends to bring all the communities within the region together as a way of promoting a peaceful cultural co-existence," the governor said.
At the same time, Timamy lauded Government efforts to address insecurity through deployment of military personnel around the dense Boni forest, which is thought to be a haven for Al Shabaab militia.
