Beware! Iteere warns of cons promising police jobs

Conmen are minting money from unsuspecting Kenyans on pretext they would help their friends and relatives join the police force.

Commissioner of Police, Mathew Iteere said he had received reports of fraudsters using the names of senior police officers, politicians and other Government officials to defraud desperate individuals.

The police boss directed the Criminal Investigations Department to investigate the reports and arrest culprits.

The Standard established that some of those conned had visited police headquarters to seek their "letters of appointment".

Iteere said the Ministry of State for Provincial Administration and Internal Security is in the process of concluding new criteria and procedures for recruitment into the Kenya Police and Administration Police Service.

"The public should note that the envisaged procedures will be a complete departure from the previous practice and anybody promising assistance based on previous practice is obviously cheating," he said.

Iteere said once the procedures were ready, they would be published in the media to sensitise the public.

Recruitment dates would also be advertised.

He added the new procedures would emphasise on integrity of the recruitment exercise, equal opportunity for all, transparency and the principles laid down in the Constitution.
