Kibaki attends Kikwete's inauguration

President Kibaki was among regional and continental leaders who joined thousands of Tanzanians at a colourful swearing in ceremony of President Jakaya Kikwete for a second and last five-year term of office.

Other African leaders who attended the colourful ceremony at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, which included a 21 gun salute and a military parade, include South African President Jacob Zuma, President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, President Joseph Kabila of DRC, King Mswati III of Swaziland, Zambian President Rupiah Banda and Ugandan First Deputy Prime Minister Eriya Kategaya.

President Kikwete was declared the winner after garnering 5,276,827 votes, representing 61.17 per cent of all votes cast. In his address, Kikwete reiterated his party’s commitment to deliver on its campaign pledges.

Noting that he was ready to take the nation to the next level of development, President Kikwete urged Tanzanians to join him in building a country that avails opportunities to all.

Later, President Kibaki joined other heads of State and Government for a state luncheon at State House gardens in Dar es Salaam.

Kibaki is accompanied by the Minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration, who is also the acting Foreign Affairs Minister Prof George Saitoti, East African Community Minister Hellen Sambili, among other senior Government officials.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Raila Odinga has congratulated Kikwete on his re-election.

The PM also praised the people of Tanzania for the peaceful election and for their commitment to holding periodic elections, saying it contributed to the strengthening of democracy not only in the country but also in the region.

The PM emphasised that stability in each country that is a member of the East African Community is important to all member states as it created space for more trade and economic development.

“With the election behind, we now have time to focus on other critical issues regarding regional cooperation and trade. His leadership in this regard will determine how much we can achieve in the coming years as a trading bloc,” he said.
