KPA teams too good for their hosts in Kisumu

[Michael Mute, Standard] Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men and women's basketball teams yesterday registered massive results after dominating the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League matches in Kisumu. The defending women's league champions registered their sixth straight win of the 2022 season after thrashing Lady Bucks 72-15 in a one-sided match played at Manyatta Arabs which hosted a double-header. Their male counterparts who are also the defending champions in the men's league joined in on the party after seeing off Lakeside 80-54 at the same venue.Defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) registered their sixth straight win of the 2022 season after thrashing Lady Bucks 72-15 in a one-sided Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women's Premier League match at Manyatta Arabs in Kisumu yesterday. Natalie Akinyi, Selina Okumu and Berryl Mulungo were on form as the dockers dominated the game from the start as they outplayed their hosts to bag the first quarter 18-6. The visitors took a healthy 46-9 halftime lead after a big 28-3 second quarter performance.In the final half, a 15-2 and 11-4 third and fourth quarter performance sealed the 72-15 win that saw KPA move top of the table standings on 12 points. KPA head coach Anthony Ojukwu said hard work and determination propelled them to the emphatic victory. "I am happy with how the girls played from the start to the end despite them making a few errors which is part of the game. Our target was to get maximum points as we continue building up for the season which is slowly picking up pace," said Ojukwu."People think we are getting these win easily because of the depth of squad but what they don't know is that these girls work hard. We have been preparing for this game since Monday when we landed in Kisumu and that shows you how serious we are." KPA centre Vilma Akinyi was elated after the match saying they are taking one match at a time as the season starts to slowly build up."We are feeling it right now. We have quality players and the rotation is healthy for our finesses ahead of each game. I believe if we maintain what we are doing right now offensively and improve on our defense we will be good to go," said the Kenyan international. In the other match, KPA men defeated Lakeside 80-54 to pick their fifth win of the campaign.The win takes them joint top with Ulinzi Warriors on 11 points. The soldiers will battle with African Nazarene University today while KPA teams will clash with Eldonet Platinum and Eldonet Ladies respectively in Eldoret. Platinum are ninth on the table with seven points having played five games, winning two and losing three while Eldonets Ladies on the other hand are sixth on the table with six points having played five games, winning one and losing four.
