NAIROBI: The National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) will set up a petroleum laboratory at the University of Nairobi, Chiromo Campus.
The oil marketer will also construct a storage facility at the institution. In a meeting with the top UoN management, NOCK CEO Summaya Hassan-Athmani said the laboratory will provide modern equipment for petroleum analysis relevant to the oil and gas industry.
In a contribution that will boost the university’s learning facilities, NOCK will also donate equipment worth Sh91 million ($1 million) to be routinely used for geochemical analysis.
UoN students will also utilise the equipment to develop new skills in some of the typical geochemical analyses required to support oil and gas exploration activities in the country.
Athmani also expressed willingness to give internships to final year students to enable them gain industrial experience. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Peter Mbithi, said the partnership with National Oil will be key in building capacity in the area of exploration, building staff capacity and promoting experiential learning among students.
