Kenya Re, Standard Group sign ‘Niko Fiti’ deal

Former Vice-President Moody Awori has called on the Government to include the disabled in top decision-making organs.

Speaking during after the signing of a partnership contract between Standard Group, Kenya Reinsurance Corporation and Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya for the ‘Niko Fiti campaign’, Awori urged President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to have a disabled person each as their advisors to articulate the challenges of the disabled persons.

“When the two leaders are appointing their advisors, they should also include the disabled in their list so that the issues of 10 per cent of Kenyans living with disability are taken care of,” said Awori.

The former VP called on the indigenous companies to take interest and support the disabled because much of the money in the past had come from the donor communities.

“As you might be aware the donor communities are slowly withdrawing their support in different areas and the local companies should fill up the space left,” said Awori. Standard Group Chief Executive Officer Sam Shollei pledged to continue supporting the initiative, terming noble and life changing.

“We at Standard Group are happy to be associated with the initiative that goes along way to improve lives and gives opportunity to the disabled who are also important members of the society,” said Mr Shollei.

He thanked Awori for the foresight that led to the starting of the organisation long before independence in 1958 and said many Kenyans will be grateful for his initiative forever.

According to Jadiah Mwarania, the Managing Director of Kenya Re ‘Niko Fiti campaign’, the initiative saw a nationwide change in the perception of persons living with disability since it was officially launched 2011. Mwarania said Kenya Re in partnership with Standard Group as media partners enlightened the public on the need to integrate persons living with disability into society.

“This has been achieved by the provision of assistive devices that were donated to various persons living with disability,” said Mwarania. Standard Group has been the exclusive media partner of ‘Niko Fiti campaign’ since inception.
