Mobile subscriber Safaricom is the overall winner of this year’s Champions of the Year Awards (CoG), with its Chief Executive Bob Collymore being named Chief Executive Officer of the Year.

Safaricom trounced other 46 organisations, in which 19 chairpersons, 26 CEOs and 5 Company Secretaries entered the Award and were evaluated.

Tharaka-Nithi Sacco Chairman, George Mati, was named Chairman of the year, while NIC Bank, Secretary Livingston Murage won the Company Secretary of the year Award.

Co-operative Development and Marketing PS, Seno Nyakenyanya said that the Award emphasised the importance of corporate governance, saying it will contribute significantly towards the envisaged good governance to be achieved under the new constitution of Kenya.

“By addressing governance issues, business growth, improved service, efficiency and effectiveness, accountability to the shareholders, will improve significantly and translate to better performance by the organisation,” said the PS.

The Awards for excellence in Corporate Governance seeks to recognise the practice and application of good corporate governance in institutional boards, identify innovations in organisations that support good governance, and encourage corporate bodies to focus on enhancement of good institutional governance.
