Police kill five in dramatic chase

By CYRUS OMBATI
Five suspected carjackers were on Sunday shot dead in a dramatic police chase outside the Kasarani International Stadium, Nairobi.

The five had carjacked a motorist in the area when police on patrol were alerted. This prompted a dramatic chase that ended up at the stadium where the five were all mowed down by police bullets.

By then, the gang had thrown away a gun they had into a bush to show they were not the wanted gang.

But police who had marked the stolen car pursued them to the site where they shot them as they tried to escape on foot.

Kasarani OCPD Leonard Omollo said the carjacked motorist escaped unhurt after he was dropped on the way by the escaping gang. The bodies were later taken to the mortuary.

The incident attracted a huge crowd that wanted to see what was happening and those involved.

More killed

The shooting brought to 11 the number of suspects who were killed at the weekend alone in separate attempted robberies.

Police say they have intensified their patrols in the city ahead of the promulgation of the new constitution.

Six others had been killed on Saturday in separate attempted robberies in the city. Two were killed in Dandora, one in Industrial Area, Shauri Moyo, Uthiru and Matumbato.

Police said they recovered three guns, ten mobile phones and undisclosed amount of money from the slain gunmen in the events.

Nairobi Area PPO Anthony Kibuchi told The Standard on Sunday they have intensified patrols to ensure residents celebrate the promulgation in style.

He said they have mobilized several personnel and enjoined sniffer dogs to help in beefing up security ahead of Friday and beyond.

“It will be a big day and some criminals may try to take advantage of the same but let them be warned we are on the ground in all ways,” he said.
