Opposition leaders call for anti-government protests on June 25

The alternative government leaders yesterday announced plans for nationwide mass demonstrations on June 25 to pressure President William Ruto to address pressing national issues.

The issues of concern, according to the leaders, include the high cost of living, high fuel prices, issuance of identity cards and concerns surrounding the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Addressing supporters during a tour of Kitui County, the leaders who included Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamwala and Justin Muturi said that the protests would be unlike any the country had witnessed in the past.

“We are yet to call our demonstrations. What we are planning is not what Ruto is used to. Our protests will be massive and inclusive. We will deal with that character decisively,” DCP party leader Gachagua stated.

He added that the opposition will remain united in its bid to form the next government.

The Opposition leaders also demanded the resignation of acting IEBC Chief Executive Officer Moses Ledama Sunkuli, with Wiper leader Kalonzo claiming ‘‘he was worse than former CEO Hussein Marjan’’, who resigned earlier.

“The acting CEO Sunkuli must resign. He is not any better than Marjan,” Kalonzo said.

In their campaign messages at Katutu, Tulia, Migwani, Mbondoni and Mwingi towns, the Opposition leaders rallied the residents to prepare to send President Ruto home in next year’s presidential election.

They urged locals to register en masse as voters ahead of the next elections.

Kalonzo said Ruto had subjected Kenyans to untold suffering through heavy taxation and the rising cost of living.

“All Kenyans are now tired of Ruto, but we have him by the throat. Let us register as voters and send him home,” Kalonzo said.

The Wiper leader also claimed the government had panicked and was flooding the Ukambani region with relief food in a desperate bid to woo residents.

“Let us eat the food and vote them out,” he said.

Kalonzo urged the Kamba community to elect only Wiper candidates, saying it would strengthen his political standing.

Gachagua also criticised Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of presiding over attacks on opposition leaders in churches.

On his part, DAP-K leader Wamalwa said that the Ruto administration had crippled the economy and called for urgent measures to ease the burden on Kenyans.

Other leaders present during the Komboa Kenya tour included Senator Enoch Wambua, Woman Representative Irene Kasalu, Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, as well as Wiper parliamentary aspirants John Makau (Mwingi Central), Mami Kivoto (Kitui South) and Stephen Kilonzo (Kitui Central).

The team will today tour parts of Kitui Central, Rural and South before embarking on a tour of the Coast region on Friday.
