Man stabs wife to death, kills self

A man killed his wife and then committed suicide in a village in Nyandarua West District.

Tears flowed freely as residents of Riverside estate tried to come to terms with the bizarre incident on Tuesday afternoon.

Cecilia Ngenia Mburu was working as a farmhand in the village when her husband accosted her with a machete, stabbed her several times in the stomach and fled.

Confirming the incident, Nyandarua OCPD Jasper Ombati said the man identified as Samuel Githinji later committed suicide by diving into a 40-foot deep well.

He said the husband pretended to help the woman plant some seeds she had been given by the employer only to turn against her.

Ombati said the couple had a disagreement the previous night before the wife ran away to her parents home, from where she reported to work that fateful morning.

Stab wounds

The police boss said Ngenia, who is a mother of three children, succumbed to neck and stomach stab wounds as she was receiving treatment at Nyahururu District Hospital.

Her mother, Lucy Njoki, told the Press that Ngenia differed with her husband after he went to Limuru for several days without informing her of his whereabouts.

Njoki said that was the fourth time her son-in-law had disappeared only to reappear a couple of days later.

Ngenia’s colleague said Githinji went to the employer’s home and requested to see his wife. He was directed to the farm where the woman was busy working.

“I later heard screams and dashed to the farm where I found Ngenia bleeding profusely. I called other neighbours who helped rush her to hospital but she died while receiving treatment,” she said.

As neighbours scoured the area for Githinji, his identity card and a cap were found next to the well where he met his death. His body was retrieved and taken to the Nyahururu District Hospital Mortuary.
