Rights body tells Wako to step aside

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has added its voice to calls for Attorney General Amos Wako to resign.

KNCHR commissioner Hassan Omar has asked Mr Wako to step aside for allegedly being an impediment to implementation of the new Constitution.

"It is time for Wako to take a personal responsibility. Let him leave office in the spirit of the new Constitution," he said.

Mr Omar also claimed that the AG had blocked the rule of law and justice. He said Wako should have stepped aside after the promulgation of the new Constitution.

"He knew that he had only one year after the implementation of the Constitution and as such left office a while back," he added

Omar cited failure to establish an electoral commission long after the Bill was passed by Parliament as some of the drawbacks in implementing new laws.

The commissioner was speaking during a sensitisation seminar for security officers on the Anti-terrorism Bill in Mombasa, yesterday.
