Community seeks orders to block eviction

By Vincent Mabatuk

A section of Leikiji community has sued the Attorney General and Commissioner of Lands seeking conservatory orders from being forcefully evicted from a parcel of land in Laikipia North District.

Under a certificate of urgency, the sub-tribe of the Rendille is asking the Nakuru High Court to issue a temporary injunction against their planned eviction.

Others listed as respondents are Nigel Welby Trent, and Christopher Francis Trent.

Through The Kituo cha Sheria, the group claimed to have occupied the suit land for over 20 years, making substantial developments on the property, including houses and schools the respondents want to occupy by force.

They claimed the respondents have been using the Provincial Administration and police officers from Nanyuki police station to harass them causing a violation of their fundamental rights.

They further accused them of using armed youths to invade their land and demolish their houses.

They claimed the police officers shot dead one person during the evictions.

Two weeks ago, two people died following a clash between police officers and the residents.

Sanayo Resian, 19, died at Nanyuki District Hospital, where he was admitted with gunshot wounds allegedly inflicted by the police.
