Motorist shoots guard in road rage drama

A security guard is admitted to a Nairobi hospital after he was shot and seriously wounded by a motorist in yet another road rage incident.

Mr Aggrey Sunguti, who works with G4S Security Company, was manning a temporary roadblock on Forest Road in Nairobi when a motorist licensed to possess a gun rammed into the barrier. The motorist, who is a Nairobi businessman, then attacked Sunguti after he and his colleagues tried to find out what had lead to the Tuesday 1am accident.

The site of the incident is part of a closed road along Forest Road to pave the way for ongoing construction.

Sunguti said the motorist was driving at high speed before he rammed onto a barrier-cum-signpost indicating a diversion. The car was extensively damaged as it also destroyed the lights and other barriers.

The guard was in the company of employees of China Wu Yi Construction Company, which is constructing the road. After the incident, the workers walked to the car to see if the occupants were injured.

"But instead he started threatening us, calling us thieves, saying he would shoot us," says Sunguti who added he was in company uniform at the time.

His colleague John Nzioka said they tried to calm the motorist down but he would not listen. Nzioka said they were shocked when they saw him draw a gun from his holster and fired twice in the air.

He then directed his weapon at Sunguti who he hit in the leg as other workers scampered for safety.

"Everyone had to run away after he shot Sunguti. We do not know why he did so because this is a roadblock with clear signs," said Nzioka.

The workers then called police who arrived to find the motorist still seated in his car. The police disarmed, arrested and locked him up at Parklands Police Station.
