SCHOOLS: National champions Onjiko and Laiser Hill dominate basketball in Rwanda

Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) National basketball boys 3x3 champions Onjiko High School from Kisumu announced their arrival at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) in style after winning their opening match.

Onjiko narrowly edged out Timbila 12-10 to complete a perfect debut as the Nyanza Region and Kisumu County champions seek to add another feather to their already growing reputation as uprising basketball champions.

Speaking to Standard Sports, Onjiko head coach Joseph Were said they want to go past the East Africa level.

“It is within our objectives that we go past the East Africa level. We want to push further to Africa Games and even the World Games because I believe we have the quality to compete amongst the best teams in the world.

“The journey started three years ago for us when I joined the school in 2020 and we are now strong enough to compete,” said Were who doubles as the school principal.

Friends School Kamusinga who finished third however we in for a rude shock after losing to Uganda’s Hope Secondary School 16-12.

In the ladies' 3x3 category, national champions Ototo Mixed Secondary from Homa Bay County failed to sparkle after going down to Ecole Ste Bernadette from Rwanda 18-11.

Butere Girls who finished runners-up in Kakamega last week were hammered 15-4 by Ssaku Secondary School from Uganda.

In basketball 5x5, national champions Laiser Hill announced their arrival in Rwanda by hammering Mbogo Secondary School from Uganda 72-69.

The former FEASSSA champions missed the East Africa games last year but they have now shown that they are back and would want to win the top prize again.
