Dagoretti High School thrashed Jamhuri High 40-16 to lift the Nairobi Metropolitan Inter-Schools Basketball tournament title held at Soweto Academy in Kibera, Nairobi at the weekend.

Raila Education Centre beat Butere Girls 49-39, to lift the girls’ trophy.

Dagoretti were flawless in the high octane boys category that had Langata, Upperhill, Jamhuri, Ongata Senior and Hospital Hill.

Butere had earlier edged Raila 28-20 in the girls’ contest before Raila rose to the occasion to deny them the trophy in the final.

The schools that contested for the girls’ title included BuruBuru, Butere, Ongata Senior and Our Lady of Mercy South B.

Tournament Patron Peter Orero said the objective of the event was to popularise the basketball  game in the slums and prepare the Metropolitan region for school games.

“It was a good tournament because some teams came from as far as Western Kenya,” Orero said.

Tournament organiser Julius Otieno said the tournament was used to re-introduce the teams back to the games after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19 pandemic.
