Equity add NBA title to Inter-provincial crown

Equity Bank are this year’s Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) champions.

Equity Bank  were crowned champions at the weekend  after beating Strathmore University 72-62 in game four of the best of five series they won 3-1.

This was the second title for the bankers who entered the league this year. They were also crowned Inter- provincial champions a fortnight ago in Muranga, a feat which saw them promoted to the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men’s Division One league. 

The bankers started off strongly, stamping their authority in the NBA tie   against  Strathmore University, winning all the four quarters 18-16, 13-12, 22-18 and 19-16.

Equity’s George Omenda led the way with 21 points, followed by Godffrey Abuya’s 16, as Peter Shilton netted and Emmanuel Soja sunk 11 and 10 respectively for the students.

“We congratulate Equity Bank for winning the league title in their first attempt and   Strathmore University for being worthy opponents. We wish all the teams well as they move up to KBF ladder,” said NBA chairman Ronny Owino.

Equity coach Radhi Ndalu thanked his winning line up, promising to maintain the squad in the KBF and only make changes whenever necessary. 

Equity winning lineup included Ian Wachiye, Anthony Mathenge, Barry Apudo, James Kamau, Victor Musyoka, Dennis Maluli, George Omenda, Vincent Onsongo, Clay Oduor, Godffrey Abuya, Sam Ochieng’ and Paul Onyango.

In the quest for NBA women’s glory Kenyatta University Oryx won game four 46-45 against Strathmore’s Sword to take the contest to the wire.

The contest now stands at 2-2 and the winner will be known this Saturday when both teams clash in game three. The Oryx took the quarters 8-10, 12-13, 18-8 and 16-5 with Susan Kinyua netting 18 points and Bettie Kananu hitting 10.

The swords had big game from Pauline Oketch who managed a game high of 21 points. Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U) won 45-28 against Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) to finish third.

Following the win KCA-U has now joined The Oryx to the KBF Women’s Premier League promotion.
