We must first be alive to the fact that Kenya is not the first country in the world to have a competitive and controversial election. The Americans have been through the same waters and have emerged united after the turbulence, with the most recent case being President Donald Trump's defeat of Hillary Clinton in what was widely viewed as a controversial election.

When I spoke at the Jamhuri Day celebrations in Nyeri Town a week ago, I put across a challenge to my fellow county citizens and indeed to all countrymen of goodwill.

“The case of Carrill vs carbolic smoke ball is a classic illustration of the law of contract,” Dr Willy Mutunga would say in his characteristic soft-spoken nature to an attentive bunch of students.

It is not easy being a leader. Especially a leader in Kenya. If, as Shakespeare put it, “uneasy lies the head that wears [the] crown,” then in a country like Kenya where politics are guided by a new and untested Constitution, things can get particularly challenging.

The paradise that is Kenya is under threat and the bliss in which the world’s best animals, tourists, businesses and people co-exist fearlessly, a fading reality that will only improve with immediate brutal and sustained response on the part of the Kenyan Government.
