Residents of Endebess in Trans Nzoia are up in arms following the shooting of a minor by an officer guarding an Agricultural Development Corporation farm.
Witnesses said the 17-year-old boy was gathering leftover maize when he was accosted by the police reservist.
The minor, who was shot in the chest, was taken to Kitale Level IV Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Picking leftover maize from harvested farms, commonly referred to as Mrogoto by the locals, is a common phenomenon in maize growing zones and a short-term livelihood means for the underprivileged.
Nancy Nasieku, a resident, condemned the incident. She said the boy was not a thief or a threat to security.
Chief Hillary Kiminy said he had been notified of the incident. “I appeal to the guards to follow due process,” he said.
MCA Peter Chakali demanded answers as Endebbes OCPD Salasyo Muriithi said they had launched investigations.
