Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu’s decision to back David Musila (Jubilee) to succeed her is causing jitters in Azimio.

Last month, Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga, while on a campaign tour of Kitui County, endorsed Julius Malombe.

Raila who was accompanied by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Ngilu among other leaders announced Ngilu’s withdrawal from the race. He said he would work with the governor at the national level if he becomes president.

“I will go with mama Ngilu to Nairobi for other assignments. Here you will choose Malombe,” Raila said.

It was expected that Ngilu would back Dr Malombe.

It has come as a surprise to many that she is supporting Musila, much to the disappointment of Wiper supporters who claim that Ngilu is undermining Azimio’s bid to capture the seat.

Yesterday, some leaders and professionals from Kitui County called on Raila to tame the governor, saying she was hell-bent on spoiling the chances of the Wiper candidate winning.

Speaking in Mutomo on behalf of the group, Michael Kivoto said they were concerned by Ngilu’s change of tune.

“Raila announced publicly that he had removed Ngilu from county politics and endorsed Dr Malombe. Why is she now undermining that position by campaigning for Musila?” posed Kivoto.

On Saturday, Ngilu and Musila attended a funeral in Mwingi where she vowed to use her political muscle to ensure the Jubilee candidate wins.

“This man here (Musila) is fit to be my successor. I request you to support him,” she said.

Addressing rallies in Kitui, Machakos and Makueni last week, Kalonzo urged residents to elect Wiper candidates.
