Spoken word: Re-emergence of the bold, uncensored voice

With spoken word poets like Qui Qarre, Dorphan, Mumbi Macharia, Kenner B, Raya Wambui, Wanjiku Mwaura, Namatsi Lukoye, Teardrops, Mufasa, Sitawa Namwalie, Sitawa Wafula, Anne Moraa and Ngwatilo Mawiyo leading the way, it was a good time. Young Kenyans joined international spoken word movements through annual events such as the National Poetry Slam – held in San Francisco – as well as local initiatives such as the Wajibu Wetu programme, an initiative anchored on supporting innovative advocacy mechanisms.
