One dead, three injured after hyena attack

A boy has died and three others injured after a hyena attacked them at Suguta Marmar area in Samburu County.

While confirming the incident, Samburu Central Deputy Police Commander Abdikadir Malicha said the boy succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Samburu County Referral Hospital in Maralal town.

The deceased was in the company of his young sister who was also bitten by the wild animal on both legs and hands as they were herding their family's goats.

The girl who is a standard two pupil is admitted at the same hospital undergoing treatment but is in a stable condition.

Mr Malicha said two other people who responded to save the children's lives from the hyena attack were also injured.

He said police received the information and rushed to the scene where they took the victims to the hospital.

"The police responded and a total of four people were rushed to hospital with injuries. Unfortunately, the boy died while undergoing treatment, another is admitted and two others were treated and discharged," he said.

He said members of the public killed the animal.

Residents in some parts of Samburu Central have been complaining of losing property and lives to wild animals especially hyena, elephant and lions attacks.

The National government through Kenya Wildlife Service has been called upon to find ways of protecting residents and their property from wild animals’ destruction.

The residents are also calling upon the government to speed up compensation for the victims of wildlife attacks in the region.
