Court gives Samboja 14 days to settle Sh5.5 million rent dispute

A retired chief has sued Taita Taveta county government, accusing it of refusing to pay Sh5.5 million in accumulated rent for his properties.

Voi Senior Resident Magistrate Fredrick Nyakundi yesterday directed Granton Samboja's administration to reach a settlement in two weeks.

The magistrate's directive came after Samboja's legal team led by John Bwire applied for more time to find a way out of the case. He said the case will come for mention in two weeks’ time.

Last week, Samboja legal team skipped an inter partes hearing.

Lawyer Duncan Mwanyumba representing former Wundanyi Chief Gideon Mwasingo, agreed with the governor’s application for 14 days to sort out the issue.

In the application filed at the Voi Principal Magistrate’s Court Civil Case No of 2020 under certificate of urgency, Mr Mwasingo wants the county administration compelled to release unpaid rent arrears and renovation costs of his premises totaling more than Sh5.5 million.

The county administration which had vacated the premises had hired the retired administrator’s premises in Wundanyi town as offices for deputy governor and other staff.
