Headaches are quite common but for some, the dull ache on the side of their head can result in a more serious ache even becoming a nightmare. According to Healthline, many people have to deal with headaches on a daily basis.

Headaches can be mild which you can ignore or get rid of after getting some sleep. Others are tension headaches which Healthline says are the most common type of headache. Migraines are more severe headaches but with varying intensity.

Before rushing to the chemist or local kiosk for some painkillers, try the remedies below for lasting relief. Remember if you have constant chronic headaches, you should see your doctor.

1. Sip some ginger tea

Ginger is an amazing tuber. The flavourful root can be used to relieve headaches, reduce nausea and help relieve cold and flu symptoms.

A simple remedy, make-it-at-home remedy can be made by boiling a cup of water and adding a teaspoon of ginger powder. Let it simmer for five minutes. Add a teaspoon of honey and drink hot.

2. Acupuncture

This ancient Chinese practice still works to date. It involves using thin needles to prick specific parts of the body which in turn stimulates a certain effect. This trusted procedure has been known to relieve headaches by many and has been adapted in some modern day clinics. Acupuncture can also be done in the comfort of our homes under the supervision of a professional.

3. Exercise

Staying cooped up indoors can also cause a headache. Your body and mind needs fresh air and exercise. Take part in some form of exercise every day, be it jogging or walking and this will increase your blood flow to the brain easing your headache.

Exercising tires the body. This helps you sleep better. When you are well-rested you are less likely to become susceptible to headaches caused by exhaustion.

Drinking the recommended eight glasses of water can be a challenge but there are so many health benefits associated with being well hydrated.

Some headaches are due to dehydration. When you feel one coming on, start by drinking more water. This can help get rid of the headache or reduce its severity.

5. Use of essential oils

Essential oils are made from plants. They often have few to no additives. Lavender and peppermint extracts can be used to ease headaches. Apply the lavender oil on your upper lip and inhale. The peppermint essential oil should be applied on the temples.

6. Use a cold press

Applying a cold compress to the neck or head has a soothing effect which ultimately helps to reduce headaches. Fill a waterproof bag with ice and wrap it in a clean towel. You can put as much ice as you wish. Apply the compress to the back of your neck, head or temple.

As common as headaches are, they can really put you off balance making it difficult to go about your day to day life. Try out these remedies for some relief.
