Coronavirus: Health personnel deployed to Maasai Mara

The Narok county government has deployed health personnel to all entry and exit gates and airstrips of Maasai Mara park to monitor the health of arriving and departing tourists.

In a statement to newsrooms on Monday, Governor Samuel Tunai said 130 healthcare workers have received special training to handle covid-19.

"We are also deploying medical personnel in tourist facilities within the Mara as well as in major public transport points," the governor added.

He added that all drastic measures issued to counter covid-19 spread will be effective for 30 days.

"After that, the government will review the prevailing circumstances and take the appropriate measures."

Non-emergency county meetings were suspended as well as closure of bars, night clubs and social gatherings.

Two rapid response teams have been set up to provide specialised care to coronavirus patients. The teams are on standby at Narok Referral and Kilgoris Sub-County hospitals.

Measures to combat coronavirus threats will be coordinated by the County Commissioner’s office and the County Emergency Response Team, which will be headed by Tunai.

Isolation units have also been set up at the County Referral and Transmara West SubCounty hospitals.

Tunai added that the county has received additional supplies of drugs and other medical supplies, including disinfectants, masks and gloves.

He went on, "We are in consultation with the private sector, among them the Red Cross, on coordinated measures to ensure prompt identification, treatment and evacuation of coronavirus patients."

All county health care workers on leave were recalled back to their work stations to enhance capacity.

Government Spokesperson Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna has said three new suspected cases of coronavirus have been reported in the country.

Fourteen other people are still under quarantine awaiting results.

Speaking when he addressed the press on Monday evening, Oguna added that all the cases are from outside the country and measures are in place to ensure more new cases are not reported.

All 34 points of entry into the country have screening centres set up, he added.
