Nine killed, five injured in Mombasa-Malindi crash

Nine people died on the spot and five others sustained serious injuries following an accident that involved a lorry and a passenger vehicle on the Mombasa -Malindi highway.
 
According to police, two drivers are among those killed in the 6.30pm accident around Mombasa Cement.
 
Coast Region Police Commander Rashid Yakub supervised the removal of the wreckage.
 
He told The Standard the lorry driver was headed to Kilifi when he lost control and hit the matatu, killing nine at the scene.
 
The Coast region police boss said five others in critical condition were taken to Kilifi for treatment.
 
The darkness posed a challenge in identifying some of the bodies, but Yakub said the process would still continue.
 
Both vehicles were towed to Kijipwa police station awaiting inspection.
 
The accident casused a traffic snarlup on the busy Mombasa-Malindi highway, giving traffic officers a hard time in opening the gridlock.
