Fire breaks out at Starehe Boys Centre- Video

Property of unknown value was today destroyed after fire broke out at Starehe Boys Centre workshop.

In a statement to the newsrooms on February 15, the school administration said the fire started at around 6.30pm.

“Smoke was spotted billowing out of one of the buildings at the Centre which houses a workshop,” Starehe’s acting director Josphat Mwaura said.

The incident happened when most of the students had gone home for their midterm break that begun today.

“Our established fire and disaster response protocols were immediately activated, specifically to account for all boys that were at the Centre while appropriate teams made preliminary efforts to contain the fire,” Mwaura said.

No one was injured during the fire incidence. The school administration said that all the boys and staff had been accounted for.

“With the intervention of Emergency Response Teams from the County Government and Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, the fire has now been extinguished,” Mwaura said.

Nairobi Fire brigade and Red Cross arrived at around 8pm to battle the inferno.  20 minutes after the arrival of the teams, Red Cross reported that the fire had been contained.

The cause of the Saturday evening inferno could not be immediately established.
