Class six boy commits suicide to avoid punishment

A class six pupil has committed suicide in Bomet County to avoid punishment from parents after stealing Sh300 from his uncle.

The 12-year-old body was found dangling from a tree Saturday morning a day after he went missing.

Confirming the incident, Kapset sub-Location assistant chief Dalmas Kitur said the body was discovered by the deceased father.

“The father stumbled on the body hanging from a tree a few meters from their homestead and immediately raised alarm,” said Kitur.

According to the father Robert Ngetich, the boy was confronted by his mother over the money that was missing before deciding to go into hiding.

“The boy was spotted wearing a new wrist watch and after interrogation he admitted taking the money and buying the watch and immediately handed back Sh100 which he had at the time and run into hiding. He thought he would be punished,” said the father.

He added that the boy had went to his brother’s home and took the money which had been left on the table and decided to buy the watch.

Cases of suicide among teenagers in Bomet has been on the rise.

Bomet County Parents Association chairman Dr Stanley Koskei said it was time every parent to get close to their children and ensure they are well disciplined.
