Over 93,000 candidates to sit for KCSE in Western region

93,236 students in Western region will be sitting this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, according to the Regional Coordinator of Education, Stephen Barongo.

The KCSE exams are set to begin on Monday. 

Barongo who spoke to the media after overseeing rehearsals at several schools within Kakamega municipality said a total of 46,864 female students and 46,322 male students will be sitting for the KCSE exams from the region.

He said Kakamega County with 442 exam centres has the highest number of students sitting for the exams in the region which stands at 33,164 candidates comprising of 16,363 male candidates and 16,801 female candidates.

“We have 390 exam centres in Bungoma and the total number of candidates in the county is 31,811 students,” said Barongo.

In Busia, 12,944 candidates will be sitting for the exams in 159 exam centres with 6,745 being male students and 6,199 being female students whereas in Vihiga, there are 162 exam centres with a total of 15,317 candidates with 6,881 male candidates and 8,436 female candidates.

“No area has been profiled in the region where exam malpractice is likely to take place,” said Barongo.

He said all measures have been put in place to ensure the integrity of the entire exercise including guarding exam materials which he confirmed have arrived and stored in containers.

“We are calling upon parents to give the candidates a humble time and they (parents) should not fall victims to exam cartels who are out to make a kill from the exercise,” he added.
