End of the road for trio who dodged arrest after Sh6m robbery

It was the proverbial 40th day for two police officers and a civilian suspected to be behind a Sh6 million heist.

The trio who have evaded a police dragnet were arrested yesterday in Kahawa West, Nairobi for robbing two businessmen in Eastleigh.

Detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said constables Simon Mwaniki, Kelvin Murangu and a civilian Martin Kithinji had dodged arrest when three other officers and a Cameroonian were arrested over the robbery.

They were aboard a saloon car when detectives from Pangani Police Station caught up with them.

After interrogations, Mwaniki led the sleuths to his Kayole and Hurlingham houses where Sh942,000 in fake currencies and 30 bullets were recovered.

Other items include two bulletproof jackets, 15 speed governors, forged driving licenses among other suspicious documents.

They are accused of stealing from two businessmen at Barwoo Lodge, 8th Street 2nd Avenue Eastleigh on October 4.

The six gunmen are said to have trailed the two businessmen to their room and ordered them to surrender the cash they had.

They obliged and handed them 60,000 US dollars in their possession. The two businessmen raised an alarm that attracted the attention of officers on patrol.

The officers on patrol intercepted the gunmen and were shocked to find they were fellow officers attached to Kayole Police Station.

Corporal Wilson Cheruiyot, police constables Daniel Kipkorir Alex Kandie and Jean Esome were found with Sh3.5 million of the loot. They had three pistols with 45 bullets.

While they arrested half of the gang on the day of the robbery, the other escaped with a manhunt being launched.
