A remarkable opening nine score 21 stableford points is all that Ben Mumo required to secure Konza Technopolis golf day overall title at the par 72 Machakos Sports Club over the weekend.

On his outward nine, Mumo who set-off quite early with no hold-up at the nine-hole course, had a great start with three back-to-back pars from the par-five first, par-three second, par-four third and the par-four fourth.

He also got another par from the front-nine on the par-three eight with bogeys on the par-four sixth, par-four seventh and the par-five ninth and a single double bogey on the par-four fifth.

Playing off handicap 16, and with a score of 21 stableford points from the front-nine, Mumo set out to the back-nine with high hopes for a better score. Unfortunately he collapsed.

With a foul start after dropping a shot on the par-five 10th, double-bogeyed the par-three 11th. He bogeyed the par-four 12th and 13th holes.

Before sinking his only birdie for the day on the par-four 14th, the side effects of the ‘birdiosis’ cost him with double-bogeys on the par- four 15th.

He would register two more bogeys on the par-four 16th and par-three 17th picking his only par from the homestretch a par-five 18th for an additional 18 stableford points to seal his victory.

“I had a relaxed round with no hold-ups. I usually play midafternoon but I had a few errands to run and thus opted for an early tee-off,” said Mumo

“Konza Technopolis golf day is one of the biggest sponsored events in Machakos and so for obvious reasons, it’s gratifying to be the winner,” Mumo said.

At Nanyuki Sports Club, top club amateur handicap 6 Cyprian Bundi shot 41 stableford points to claim the Njuri Njeke golf tournament. Dr Samantha Mathu was the Lady winner on a score of 34 stableford points.
