Two houses belonging to the Kenya Railways were razed under unclear circumstances in Kisumu.

The fire started at around noon.

The houses did not have any tenants at the time of the incident since officials from Kenya Railways had evicted occupants as part of the ongoing port renovation exercise.

Suspected cause

While some of the residents suspected an arson attack, others claimed it might have been as a result of an electric fault.

Mohammed Hilo, a resident, said their attempts to put out the fire failed.

“We tried to break into the house to no avail as the fire had spread to the adjacent house. We called the police and firefighters who rushed to the scene,” said Hilo.

Kisumu County Commander Benson Maweu said they have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
