On December 22, 2015, Salah Sabdow Farah was shot as he shielded fellow Kenyans, non-Muslims, from being killed by Al Shabaab who had attacked their bus as they travelled from Nairobi to Mandera. The teacher died a month later.

However, his act of courage and love for other Kenyans still lives in the minds of most Kenyans.

More than three years since his death, some residents of Mandera have put their lives on the line to save their brothers and sisters. On Sunday, they scuttled a plan by the terrorists to massacre more than 20 quarry workers.

The residents warned the workers, most of them non-Muslims, to vacate the quarry. When the vile men marched to the site with guns ready to shed blood, they found no one.

Apparently, Mandera residents are determined to avoid a repeat of the 2014 Al Shabaab murder of 36 quarry workers in the county. Such life-saving acts should be lauded by all and sundry.

In fact, Kenyans from all walks of life have a big lesson to learn from Mandera; we must be our brothers’ keepers. The war against Al Shabaab will never be won until we all borrow a leaf from Mandera. Only when Kenyans will stop sleeping with the enemy will Al Shabaab be routed out of the country.

Notably, some people have in the past been accused of failing to report to authorities or even warn fellow Kenyans about impending Al Shabaab attacks. Such people are no better than Al Shabaab. They have blood on their hands for not helping prevent needless deaths.
