Woman dies after falling into 40-feet pit latrine

A team from Kericho County and area police have been in the process of retrieving a body of 25-year-old woman who died after falling into a pit latrine in Mlimani Estate in Kericho Town.

Kericho Town chief Duncan Bii said that Dorcas Chebet, a mother of one, met her death at around 3 am Sunday after she went to relieve herself only for the toilet’s concrete floor to sink after the soggy walls caved in.

It was only in the morning that her neighbour who also wanted to relieve herself noticed the toilet walls had caved in and the deceased was missing.

"We are currently at the scene trying to retrieve the deceased body’s. The challenge is that the Kericho County exhauster’s sucking pipe is not deep enough to reach the 40 feet deep pit latrine," said Bii.

Kericho County Police Commander James Mugera added that debris in the latrine was the other factor hampering the efforts to retrieve the body.

Kipchebor MCA Erick Bett asked landlords in the area to check the state of their pit latrines and ensure that they are safe for use by the tenants.
