Some Mt Kenya leaders are rooting for former presidential candidate Joseph Nyaga to take over as the region’s kingpin once President Uhuru Kenya retires in 2022.

Mount Kenya Opinion Shapers say Mr Nyaga is the well-placed leader to take over after 2022.

Led by Bishop Johana Ndirangu, the group said Mr Nyaga has all the necessary qualifications to be the region’s kingpin due to his immense experience in government.

“Nyaga has experience having been a minister and an MP for many years. We feel he is the best suited person to take over as the region’s kingpin," Mr Ndirangu said.

Henry Karanja a businessman from Karatina Nyeri County said Nyaga is the senior most politician in the region in terms of age and experience.

“The region needs to go to the 2022 elections as united if it wants to be part and parcel of the next government.

"Currently the leaders in the region are sharply divided which is not a good thing for the people” he said.

Reverend Michael Githinji from Full Gospel Church in Kirinyaga said Nyaga should from now henceforth be actively involved in the region’s succession politics.

“We need a person who is not tainted and who has the interest of the people at heart as the regions next kingpin. Mr Nyaga is the best bet for that position” he said.

The leaders were speaking at a meeting in Kiambu.
