A four-wheel-drive that was stolen from a personal assistant to Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has been recovered in Nairobi.

The Toyota Kluger is said to have been stolen from Museveni’s fleet of cars in November last year. It was driven to Nairobi, where its number plates were changed.

Last weekend, the vehicle, which had two occupants, was spotted being driven around Nairobi. When officers from the Flying Squad flagged it down along Waiyaki Way, the driver sped off, prompting a chase for more than 100km.

The driver and his passenger later abandoned the vehicle just before they reached the main weighbridge in Gilgil.

Head of Flying Squad Musa Yego said they had alerted officers manning the weighbridge to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

“They abandoned the car by the roadside and vanished into the bush. We are looking for them,” Mr Yego said.

He added that the car had been fitted with fake South Sudan plates; SSD 598M.

Police officers on Monday drove the vehicle to Kampala and handed it over to Museveni's personal assistant.

Yego cautioned Kenyans against buying cars bearing foreign registration numbers.

He said most of the cars had fake documents and details hence the need to be careful.

“Those willing to buy cars bearing foreign registration numbers must be careful and thoroughly counter-check with relevant authorities,” he said.

Yego said his team was handling numerous complaints where unsuspecting buyers had lost money after buying non-existent vehicles.
