Sonko: More demolitions coming soon

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said that buildings in Nairobi that have been constructed without approval from City Hall will be brought down.

Speaking during his visit to Kabiro area in Kawangware Estate, where fire razed down several structures last week, Sonko said that the Nairobi County government has started inspection of approvals for all buildings in Nairobi.

Sonko went on to explain how unapproved buildings are the cause of tragedies around the city using the Kabiro fire incident as an example.

“The County will take stern action against those who construct sub-standard houses in Nairobi. Most of those houses end up causing tragedies leading to loss of lives. My administration will take measures to prevent tragedies caused by sub-standard buildings,” Sonko said.

After addressing and condoling with the residents, he donated household items and foodstuffs to victims of the fire tragedy and promised cater for funeral expenses for an infant who perished during the inferno.

Early last week, it was not business as usual at Buruburu phase four when the governor stormed the area to stop the demolition of a church and a primary school by an alleged land grabber.

Sonko who responded after being informed about the incident found armed youths with pangas, spades and other weapons destroying Kinderstart Primary School and an adjacent church on claims that they were enforcing a court order.

A bare-knuckled confrontation ensued after the rowdy youths started pelting Governor Sonko with stones, after he and his team had arrived to stop the demolition.

A group of youths accompanying the county boss engaged the defensive youths in a nasty fight that saw several injured.

Three suspects were arrested in the saga.
