Stop threatening Kenyans over Huduma Namba — Nairobi Senator Sakaja

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Thursday asked the government to stop issuing threats to Kenyans over Huduma Namba registration.

Speaking at the Senate, Sakaja said it was wrong for Kenyans to be put under pressure for things that were not clearly explained to them.

"Why is the government acting as if it is at war with the people, why are you threatening Kenyans? Today you are telling them to take Huduma Namba, tomorrow it is about house levy, the following day you are imposing sanction on importation of vehicles," said the senator.

Further, he implored President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration to adopt a better approach as far as implementing policies is concerned.

"There is something fundamentally wrong with this government that needs to be addressed, the youths of this country are learned, qualified yet unemployed, but the government is not talking about this issues," he noted.

On the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in schools, the senator questioned why teachers who are challenging the procedure are being arrested.

"When teachers ask valid questions about the curriculum, they are arrested and taken to court. The same government expects them to teach pupils the following day," he added.

Prior to his exit, former Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe revealed that there will be consequences for Kenyans who will not register for the Huduma Namba.

Speaking during an interview at a local TV station, Kiraithe hinted that those without the number might not access government services and will have to register in the long run to avoid inconveniences. ?

He compared the Huduma Namba to the National Identification Card and even highlighted instances where you cannot transact without an ID.

New government spokesperson Colonel (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna echoed a similar message this week, asking Kenyans to take advantage of the remaining days and register for the number.

“The world is going digital and the process of registering Kenyans to acquire Huduma Namba will go a long way in helping the government achieve its goal of a complete digital transformation.

“The Huduma Namba will ease government’s service delivery and so I am calling on those who have not registered to do as before the deadline,” Oguna said.
