Friends and relatives of the slain university student packed the homestead of Isaac Kaura in Kieyia, Kangeta, Igembe Central on Tuesday to condole with the family.

Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) student Ann Kanario, 21, was found dead in her apartment a few metres from the university's main campus on Monday alongside an alleged boyfriend who was found hanging from the roof.

Her parents who last spoke to the fourth year student on Friday said that she had gone back to her apartment to arrange how to move her belongings back home so that she could report for her internship on Monday.

“I left some money with her mother to facilitate the move of her belongings before she was to move to Nairobi,” said her father, Isaac Kaura.

The Business Administration finance major student had secured an internship at a bank in Nairobi.

Her parents, however, said they were not aware that Ann was in a relationship and were adamant that they were not aware of any problems she was facing.

Ann’s grief-stricken mother Jerusha Nkirote who is a businesswoman said she last spoke to her daughter on Friday morning at around 8:30 when she sent her money but could not reach her two hours later.

“I spoke to Ann on Friday morning and again after sending her money at around 8:30. When I tried to reach her two hours later however, her phone was off,” said the mother.

The mother informed Ann’s father that he could not reach her but the father advised her to be patient because their daughter probably wanted some time alone to unwind before starting her internship.

“When her mother told me, I asked her to be patient since Ann did not have any problems and she was not afraid to ask for help if needed and if we had not heard from her by Monday, we would actively seek her out,” said the distraught father.

The family received the heart-breaking news from Ann’s older sister Winnie who is on an internship in Kiambu.

“My oldest daughter called us crying at around 12 noon on Monday to break the news that her sister had been found dead in her apartment and that the man who allegedly killed her was also found hanging in the same house,” said Kaura.

Ann’s father a secondary school teacher blamed capitalism for the increased student murders and suicide cases in the country.
