Bomet Woman linked to abortion bid arrested

Police are holding a 42-year-old woman who was allegedly found trying to help a Form Three girl procure an abortion.

The suspect was busted on Sunday evening at her home in Motigo village of Bomet Central moments after the girl arrived.

The police say they had put the suspect on their radar for a month following a tip off from the public.

Township location chief Reuben Ng'etich, who led the operation, said the 18-year-old girl had travelled from Olenguruone to have the pregnancy terminated.

Mr Ng'etich said Sh2, 500 was paid for the procedure.

He said they were looking for a male accomplice who transported the girl bust escaped arrest.

Bomet County Commissioner Geoffrey Omonding said in 2018 alone more than 100 cases of pregnancies in schools were reported among them 33 cases of girls who sat national exams.

Omonding said some of the pregnancy cases were as a result of defilement linked to drug and alcohol abuse by men.

The commissioner said they have stepped up the war on men preying on young girls saying to curb the case.

“We have decided to take the war to the door steps of parents who fail to report and choose shortcut at the expense of justice for their daughters,” he said

Residents who spoke to the standard said the girl who had disguised herself in civilian clothes had camped in the village over the weekend.

They said she had been turned away twice by the suspect after failing to raise the required amount for the procedure.

“She came twice and was turned away and had to wait until yesterday after raising the amount required,” said one of the residents who requested anonymity.
