County nominates five to disability committee

County nominates five to disability committee.

Activist Mike Makarena and Beatrice Mwendwa are among nominees to the Meru County Committee for Persons Living with Disabilities.

The two alongside Moses Ngechu, Daniel Mwangangi and Lucy Nkatha will be vetted by the Assembly Committee on Justice chaired by Kinyua Toribu.

The committee, appointed by Education, Gender and Social Services Executive Linner Nkirote, is expected to implement the Meru County Persons with Disability Act, 2016 which seeks to protect health, education and other rights for people with various forms of disability.

Asenath Kaimuri, who was nominated to represent persons with disabilities in the assembly, said there was a large number of people living with disabilities who had no access to services and opportunities.

Ms Kaimuri also said funds available for affected people were inadequate.

Last year, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics showed that Meru has about 8.5 per cent of persons with disabilities. Many have complained of being denied services.
