Mwatate businessman elected Taita-Taveta Branch KNCCI chairman

Businessman Andrew Mwamburi has been elected new local Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) during elections held yesterday.

Mwamburi who's based in Mwatate, narrowly beat the incumbent Kenneth Zenge by 14 votes against 12 votes.

However, the elections held in Wundanyi Town were marred by claims of voter bribery.

It was the second time Mwamburi was facing off with Zenge in KNCCI branch elections. Zenge beat Mwamburi three years ago to clinch the seat in the branch that has over 100 members.

Peter Mwabili took the vice chairman's seat unopposed.

KNCCI's outgoing chairman Kiprono Kittony had, during a visit to the region last year, said the agency would embark on a campaign to increase its membership in the county.

Mwamburi said he will endeavour to champion interests of small-scale traders and empower them economically.

"I also promise to fight for a conducive working environment for all business people in this region," he said.

Mwamburi said he will also work with the county government to ensure traders access loans.

"We will ensure the county government provides a legal framework to guide use of Sh5 million set aside in 2016 to help traders," said Mwamburi.

KNCCI national elections will be held on May 28.
